The role of values and emotions in user experience

Piia Nurkka

This paper examines the element “the user” in user experience. Current literature suggests that perhaps the most important aim for design is not to serve our needs and help our goal achievement, but to give meaning to our lives. The goal of this paper is to broaden the user experience framework by conveying the relation of user-related elements to each other and their role in user experience. By reviewing the relevant literature from design, HCI, and consumer research we suggest a tentative conceptual description of the relationship between user values and emotions.
