Abstract

PrEmo is a non-verbal self-report instrument that measures 14 emotions that are often elicited by product design. The unique strength of PrEmo is that it combines two qualities: it measures distinct emotions and it can be used cross-culturally because it does not ask respondents to verbalize their emotions. In addition, it can be used to measure mixed emotions. PrEmo data can be useful for evaluating the emotional impact of existing designs (e.g. for creating an emotional benchmark), or for creating insights in the relationship between product features and emotional impact that are valuable in an early design stage.

2DES

2DES is a self-report measurement of the emotion expressed by a stimulus. 2DES is basically a computer program designed to collect the continuous ratings provided by the participants.

Differential Emotions Scale

The Differential Emotions Scale (DES) is a standardized instrument that reliably divides the individual’s description of emotion experience into validated, discrete categories of emotion. The DES was formulated to gouge the emotional state of individuals at that specific point in time when they are responding to the instrument.

Emo

Self-confrontation allows the collection of extended data on the user experience without interfering with the interaction. Psychophysiological indicators could be included to increase the quality of the measurement. The exact scales used are not yet defined at this stage but will be specifically designed for product use situations (with a strong emphasis on software, websites and consumer electronics).

Emoscope

The Emoscope groups together a set of techniques that aim to enrich the aspects of Emotional Usability in the processes of auditing the Experience of Use from a double approach: intervention on the product (EmoTools) and on the process of design (UseTherapist).

FaceReader

Real-time analysis of facial expression from a video.

Feeltrace

Feeltrace is a software tool designed to collect self-report from observers watching the stimulus to be evaluated.

Geneva Emotion Wheel

A structured set of emotions that is presented in a graphical form, which is user-friendly, allowing the respondent to rapidly understand the principle.

PAD Emotion Scales

The PAD Emotion Scales is a set of self-report scales based on the semantic differential technique. Participants in a test rate each stimulus (i.e. product). From these ratings a score on the three main dimensions of affect (pleasure, arousal and dominance) can be calculated. The companion software can also calculate a score for 8 basic emotions and rank them (from closest to the reported emotional state to furthest apart from this state).

PrEmo

Instead of relying on the use of words, respondents can report their emotions with the use of expressive cartoon animations. In the instrument, each of the 14 measured emotions is portrayed by an animation of dynamic facial, bodily, and vocal expressions. PrEmo can be used in internet surveys, formal interviews, and in qualitative interviews.
