The Cognitive Significance of Furniture Design for Children between the Ages 0-6

Child has physical and mental developments. While physical development concerns anthropometrical data such as weight-length growth, mental development is determined by heredity and environmental conditions and has various characteristics in different perionds. In 0-6 age period, child?s sensations, perceptions, emotions and intuitions develop. Experiences manipulate bodily perceptions of the child. Senses and emotions in infancy differs in cognitive processes and constitute a system. In satisfaction of emotions such as love, trust, independence, success, esteem, and belongingness, child-furnitures have a significant role. The child in 0-6 period learns how to approach to stimulants, distinguish objects in terms of shape, size and function and develops a sensibility for color, light and texture. Furnitures and other objects independently gain their significance in relevance to each other in the space. It can be deduced that child gets through a dense learning process and its development is at its peak in this period. This process can be directed by the stimuli from a well- designed environment and objects. Hence, it is very important that the objects in child?s environment should be designed according to development processes of the child, taking emotional criteria into account..
